Revitalising Tradition: The Restoration of the Old Beechy Oven in Beech Forest

Beech Forest, a place where history and community spirit converge to create something truly special. We are thrilled to share an exciting chapter in our town's story: the restoration of the Old Beechy Oven. This beloved historical landmark, once the heart of our local culinary tradition, is undergoing a transformative revival, and we couldn’t be more excited about the journey ahead.

A culinary glimpse into the past

The Old Beechy Oven, c1884, has long been a symbol of the town’s rich heritage. Originally used by generations of Beech Forest residents to bake bread and other delightful treats, this wood-fired oven is more than just a piece of equipment—it’s a living artifact of our community's history.

For decades, the oven served as a communal hub where families would gather and  share stories while purchasing their bread. Its distinctive brickwork and the aroma of wood-fired baked goods are cherished memories for many longtime residents. But as time passed, the oven moved from Beech Forest and its once vibrant role in our community faded.

The restoration vision:  After many years and a few moves around the district the oven was discovered in Beech Forest and local support for the restoration was enthusiastically garnered.   Today, the town's restoration project aims to breathe new life into the Old Beechy Oven while preserving its historical integrity. This ambitious undertaking is more than just a renovation; it's a way to reconnect with our past and reinvigorate our community spirit.

Preserving the Past: The Beech Forest Progress Association with support from the Otway Districts Historical Society and other community members and businesses is committed to maintaining as close to the original design and materials of the oven as possible. Skilled artisans will carefully restore the brickwork and ensure that the traditional wood-fired heating system is rebuilt to its former glory. Every detail, from the arching dome to the intricate oven door, will be meticulously preserved.

Enhancing the Future: While honoring its history, we’re also incorporating modern elements to make the oven a functional centerpiece for future generations. This includes installing updated safety features and creating a space where community events and baking demonstrations can take place.

Community Engagement: This project is driven by the passion and dedication of our community. Local volunteers, historians, and craftspeople are all playing vital roles in the restoration. We are also planning to involve local schools and organisations, offering educational opportunities that highlight the importance of heritage and craftsmanship.
